The people of Barcelona and foreigners in the city have marked on the calendar the beginning of the festivities of Gràcia as one of the unavoidable popular events in the Catalan capital. The afternoon of August 14 will begin the festivities, which will offer about a thousand free proposals for the entertainment of all audiences.
The Festa Major de Gràcia Foundation has prepared more than 900 free activities for all audiences. This year there will be 23 neighborhood commissions that will decorate the streets of very diverse themes: polar bears, New York, ‘La Casa de Papel’, Vikings, Polynesia or Christmas.

History
The origin of the festivities of Gracia dates back to 1817, or at least it is a first written record that exists about its celebration. Initially this took place coinciding with the feast of San Isidro, on May 15, since it was the patron saint of farmers and the Villa de Gracia, at that time it was a small town of few inhabitants dedicated almost exclusively to agriculture.
At the beginning of the twentieth century there is evidence that spectacular scenographies were made in the streets adorned by parties, in which relevant artists of the time participated. In those years the street decoration contest began and, in 1935, the Comitè de Fires i Festes was created, antecedent of the Festa Major de Gràcia Foundation.
